Veterans of the Bayou documentary team up to support animals

Musician Nils Lofgren was featured in MTI’s Emmy-nominated PBS documentary The Bayou: DC’s Killer Joint. Graphic artist and editor Dick Bangham also worked on the doc, giving the piece its dazzling visual style. And together they have created a heart-warming music video aimed at helping dogs and other animals in need.

D.C. native Lofgren told Bangham that he was very touched by the work of comedian Ricky Gervais and also Niall Harbison, who regularly donate to animal charities. So moved was the guitar player that he wanted to write a song to try to help animal rescue organizations. And so he wrote “World Through Your Eyes,” a beautifully heart-felt paean to man’s best friend.

After the song was done, Lofgren called Bangham a week before Christmas with the idea of posting the song online. The pair have worked together on various projects for about 30 years. “I said, Let’s make something for people to look at,” recalls Bangham.

So they discussed ideas and settled on photos focusing on dogs’ soulful eyes.

The Hounds of Love: Keeping an Eye on the Process

Lofgren wanted the video to go online on Christmas Eve, telling Bangham, “Go do your magic.”

“I mapped out the lyrics and timed them and figured we’d need 20 photos of dogs,” recalls Bangham. So word got out and a flood of pooch pix arrived in Bangham’s email, many of Nils and his wife Amy’s beloved pets, with more hound shots from Lofgren’s brother Tom, Lofgren’s manager, as well as from Ricky Gervais and other celebrity dogs.

In the end, Bangham had only three days to finish the video before the Christmas Eve deadline. “What was a simple idea turned into a production,” he notes, adding that Mr. Lofgren is “very hands-on.” So with a deadline looming, there was much back-and-forth about which dogs would make the cut, where, how long, etc. Which is the general routine for regular video production.

In the end the song and video are a fitting and emotional tribute to our wonderful four-legged friends. As the credits note, donations and more information can be had at nilslofgren.com/throughyoureyes. Dick Bangham also supports Pound Puppy Rescue.
