When we put together a budget we spend as much time with the client as we can. Whether by Zoom, telephone, or email, we work to get a clear understanding of what they want.
We ask a lot of questions and even after we receive answers, many times a followup is needed. It is very important in the proposal process to strictly lay out what MTI is doing for a client in terms of strategy, creativity, and content. After 32 years of operating a business we understand that the worst thing to do is to assume. That’s where mistakes are made. And they can be costly!
There are times when we are given the amount of money that a client has to work with. That makes it easier to work backwards in the budget process.
However, most of the time we are looking at a blank slate when a client asks about producing videos, or webcasting a virtual event.
Smart Questions, Good Answers
In budgeting, we always need to know:
- * How many shooting days?
- * How many locations?
- * Is the client supplying a script or do they need a script adapted?
- * Will there be voice-over?
- * Will music be used?
- * What is the end use for the video?
These are are some of the key questions, but there are always more.
A budget is a combined effort of the MTI Producers, videographers, encoding techs, and editors because each job is has different requirements that must be addressed. This is a team effort and the client input is critical to a successful production and a live event.
The client has expectations for high quality and originality, but also that the production hit its budget parameters. We make sure that everyone is on the same page in terms of deadlines and costs.
MTI has a responsibility to its clients but also to its top-notch staff. We are continually learning about new equipment and new techniques, all of which can impact a budget.
