Why Producing Comedy Shows Is Always Good Business

Producing two Netflix comedy specials in 2025.
MTI founder and director Dave Lilling had the opportunity to work on two Netflix comedy specials in 2025. The first one was shot in Wilmington, North Carolina, at the Wilson Center, and featured comedy star of the moment Leanne Morgan. Morgan is the star of the new Netflix sitcom Leanne, and author of the New York Times best-selling book, What in the World?!
The second comedy special was shot at the venerable Warner Theatre in Washington, D.C., and featured renowned comedian Mo Amer, star of the Peabody Award-winning Netflix series Mo, which is loosely based on his experiences as a Palestinian refugee.
A Good Combination of Past and Future
Dave, a longtime member of the Directors Guild, was an Assistant Director and Stage Manager for both shows.

Says Dave, “In Wilmington, I had the chance to work with a mixture of youth and experience. The locals are part of the Cape Fear Community College. This gives me great hope for the future of our business; many young talented people, led by Production Manager Robert Coluccio and Ash Black.”
The Warner Theatre show was a different vibe, with a lot of grizzled veterans on hand for the production. “I did meet some very promising PAs who are on their way in this business,” says Dave, adding, “It was a delight to work with true professionals. Both the Leanne Morgan production team and the Mo Amer production team were top-notch.”
“Yes the compensation is always nice,” Dave notes, adding, “but to watch two professionals at the top of their game entertaining audiences is special. Especially in this day and age when you need to laugh.”
