The Hatcher Group called MTI for help recording an event for the Southern Maryland National Heritage Area, “Southern Maryland 250: Liberty and Legacy,” which took place at the Thomas Stone National Historic Site in Port Tobacco, Md. (Stone was a signer of the Declaration of Independence). There would be several speakers and an unveiling of a plaque dedicating the planting of a new Maryland Liberty Tree. Liberty Trees were symbols of civic engagement and self-governance during the American Revolution. The event also featured live music by David and Ginger Hildebrand, co-founders of the Colonial Music Institute, which specializes in researching and performing early American music and dance.

Speakers included Maryland Senator Chris Van Hollen, Lucille Walker, executive director of the Southern Maryland National Heritage Area, and Alan Spears, of the National Parks Conservation Alliance.

No Time To Waste

The challenging issue for MTI was that the outdoor event was to begin at 9 a.m. but the crew could not have access to the site until 6 a.m. So setup and testing would have to be quick. Recording outdoors always presents extra concerns, and having to capture live music just adds to the difficulties. “It was a real fire drill,” says MTI president Dave Lilling, who was the production manager for the shoot.

The crew included streaming director Analee Wong, videographer Ben Wong, audio director Josh Roberts, with John O’Brien and Al Porter on audio as well.

Equipment included the Sony FX 6 camera, Black Magic switcher, Behringer X32 mixer, Aperture lighting, and audio microphones for speakers and musical performers.

Of course, everything worked out well, including the weather.
