When big news is made it doesn’t have to mean hiring a big crew to cover it. On May 4, 2021, the Virginia Tech Innovation Campus in Alexandria, Va., called a press conference to announce the very large news that the Boeing company would be making a $50 million, multiyear commitment to help fund the university’s graduate technology campus. But before that, they called Metro Teleproductions to help broadcast the event to the world.
Noting the magnitude of the news, Virginia Governor Ralph Northam was on hand to make remarks, as were both Sen. Mark Warner and Rep. Don Beyer. David Calhoun, CEO and President of the aerospace giant and defense contractor, explained that the company’s gift “is meant to promote a skilled and diverse workforce.” Perhaps it is no coincidence that Calhoun is a 1979 graduate of Virginia Tech. The university’s president, Timothy Sands, welcomed everyone to what he called a “milestone moment” in the university’s history.
Innovation Campus Vice President Lance Collins and VT Board of Visitors’ Tish Long also delivered speeches marking the occasion. As the Washington Post reported, Boeing’s donation will be the largest corporate gift to the university, based in Blacksburg, Va., and will match Virginia Tech’s largest gift ever.
The Post also noted that this corporate gift “reflects the interest companies are showing in an educational project in Alexandria near the site of the new Amazon headquarters.”
All In a Day’s Stream
To properly capture the event, the one-camera/two-person crew consisted of videographer Tony Winthrop behind the Panasonic AGDVX200 4K camera and streaming director John Bogley operating a MacBook Pro loaded with Wirecast software to stream the event to Virginia Tech’s Youtube channel.
