MTI helps Live Events produce a time-altering show

Hyperlapse, Live Events
Metro Teleproductions was hired by Live Events to produce video for its client, Kearney & Company, which was celebrating it’s 40th anniversary at the Gaylord National Resort & Convention Center at National Harbor. The job was to create introductory videos that would be projected onto the screens on stage as each presenter appeared.
The specific request was for “promotional, commercial-style B-roll footage of the Gaylord Resort exterior, interior atrium, and areas around National Harbor.” The client also wanted aerial drone footage of the resort, which, as cameramen Todd Burger notes, is “obviously a difficult request considering the close distance to Reagan National Airport.”
But Todd is resourceful and this is what he prepared:
- Hyperlapse B-roll with forward-motion walking toward the requested areas, using a Ronin gimbal to stabilize the footage and to create motion to make the B-roll more dynamic
- Slow moving, wide angle pans and tilts of the resort areas and National Harbor Ferris wheel area, footage to be used behind the lower thirds of presenters names and projected on the IMAG screens on stage
Production Tricks: Moving Through Time
Hyperlapse is a form of time-lapse video where the camera moves. That is, shooting a single frame of video over a particular time. In this case, the hyperlapse setting was on the camera’s Timelapse Mode, shooting one frame every eight seconds. The result is an almost hypnotic visual of moving through space.
Getting the Right Tool for the Job
The equipment used was the Sony FX 30 camera with a DJI Ronin gimbal for smooth camera moves. The frame rate was set at 59.97, so that a seamless slow motion effect could be achieved. The MP4 format was used to create a smaller file size, meaning a faster upload to the client.
The resulting footage looks pretty impressive. View it here.
Before, After, and During: MTI Is On the Job
Often when producing events, footage is required before the show takes place and MTI is prepared to handle all such requests. A perfectly executed hyperlapse video is just one of many creative possibilities. Contact us to learn more!
