Creating a Senate Campaign Ad
MTI was contacted by the political media firm Thematic Campaigns to provide a video crew and all the camera and lighting equipment for a full-day shoot. The production was to create a campaign ad for Rep. Colin Allred (D-Tex). Allred is running for the Senate seat now held by Ted Cruz. This video was the crucial first ad of his media campaign, intended to be used throughout Allred’s social media sites and TV spots.

Because of the timely and important nature of this project, the budget was big enough to hire a larger crew than is often the case. While MTI prides itself on being able to run a lean-and-mean shoot, it’s always nice to have the resources to add important positions to a project. In this case, we were able to hire a Gaffer, TelePrompter Operator, separate Audio Engineer, and a Hair and Makeup Artist.
Bigger Crews For Bigger Ambitions
The full crew consisted of Ben Wong (director of photography), Jason Quinn (audio), Ed McCready (gaffer), Justin Klein (prompter), and Lisa Diana (hair and makeup). MTI supplied all necessary video gear, including the Sony FS7 MII camera and Aputure lighting; audio gear, boom and lavalier microphones were supplied by Jason Quinn. As you can see from the photo below, there were many cooks in a small space, each making sure the video soup was simmering just right. But in this case, every member was focused on their own tasks.
When the Shooting Stops the Editing Begins
As this was a pure production job, the client handled all of the editing and post-production. As soon as shooting ended, MTI sent over all of the recorded materials so that Thematic Campaigns could get to work editing. Perhaps even more so than in regular video production, in the political media landscape, time is always of the essence.
Shortly after production wrapped, the first spot appeared on TikTok.
