MTI doesn’t just work with news companies, corporations, and non-profits. Recently, we were able to help filmmaker Joachim De Munck with his feature film by lending him cameras and equipment. Joachim’s sci-fi tale The Long Hibernation is a story about a prisoner who wakes up from a life sentence spent in frozen hibernation for a crime he may not have committed, and the young jailer who tries to separate truth from lies.

Videographer, Editor and Filmmaker

Joachim had worked with MTI before, as both videographer and editor on the production about homeless advocate Gordon Brown and his bike ride across the country to raise awareness and assist those in need. You may see that post here.

So, knowing that Joachim was a serious and skilled filmmaker, MTI was happy to help when he approached us about his project.

Lights, Camera, Cooperation

Says Joachim, “For this production, the one-stop camera house MTI armed the shooting crew with extra portable powerful lights, stands, and an extra camera unit so the dialogue scenes could be shot at a faster pace at multiple angles at the same time.”

Joachim also says that he chose MTI “because as a filmmaker” he found MTI “a fantastic hub for camera equipment located in the heart of D.C., always ready to think along with creative producers.”

Joachim has worked in television productions in Europe for more than 20 years before, as he says, “marrying his American wife, Ana, and making it across the pond.” And so he plans to complete filming the movie in the Netherlands, Belgium, and France this summer.

Production and Talent

The production also got help from the Georgetown University Police and Ambulance department, which provided equipment necessary for achieving the look of a future jail. The Glen Echo Fire Department also provided extra medical props, for realism.

The production will call in “several colleagues at the visual design department of the University,” says Joachim, “to help on the special effects in post production, like the aging of the characters during the time lapses in the movie,” explains Joachim.

Sofia Khananayev was the set producer, assisting with construction of the set, managing the talent, and setting up the key shots, while Joachim “focused on setting up lights, lenses, and yelling ‘Action!’ to bring the frozen criminals to life.” Below is a gallery of scenes from the making of The Long Hibernation, a film by Joachim De Munck.
