How a One-Person Crew Can Get Big Results
Metro Teleproductions was contacted by the James Madison Memorial Fellowship Foundation to produce a livestream of its 27th Annual James Madison Lecture on the campus of Marymount University in Arlington, Va. The event was a conversation between Pulitzer Prize-winning author Stacy Schiff and Dr. Jeffry Morrison, the Foundation’s Director of Academics, that focused on Schiff’s books, The Revolutionary: Samuel Adams and A Great Improvisation, Franklin, France, and the Birth of America. The James Madison Memorial Fellowship Foundation was established by Congress in 1986 to improve teaching about the United States Constitution. The one-hour lecture was streamed live over YouTube.
The Revolution Will Be Livestreamed
While we normally prefer to produce these types of shows with at least a two-person crew, we can accomplish a simple one-videographer/web streaming event, as long as the audio isn’t too complicated and there are no PowerPoint slides to cut in. This is because with a single videographer, the computer is set for automatic streaming, while the focus is on getting the best camera angles as the subjects talk, alternating between a two-shot and closeups of the speakers. That was the case for this production; everything went smoothly from beginning to end.
The Camera Crew
In this case, John Bogley was the production man in charge. He arrived at the location two-and-a-half hours early to set up, and received the YouTube link from the client. The equipment was one camera—the 4K Sony Z80—a laptop for streaming, a podium microphone, and two lavalier mics on the guests.
